Mushrooms in the Hands© ZASTAVKIN| Dreamstime.com
I try to ingest several mushroom products every day, and for good reason. I have a strong personal and family history of cancer, and I also have suffered in the past from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia symptoms, allergies, and frequent colds and flu.
Thousands of scientific studies have proven that many different beneficial components in mushrooms can help me with most, if not all, of my health.. past and present.
The whole mushrooms and mushroom extracts and powders I have in my home come from a variety of sources which I am going to share with you. I consume maitake, shiitake, cordyceps, reishi, agaricus blazei, portabella, crimini, and the plentiful stand by…. those white button mushrooms which are plentiful in our grocery stores.
Because I live in Canada, and on the east coast where unusual foods are difficult to come by, ESPECIALLY in the winter, I have used my creativity in internet sourcing, and recipe engineering to make sure I get a healthy variety of mushrooms every day.
First, where I get my mushrooms….
Agaricus Blazei- I take my agaricus blazei in liquid form. I get a concentrated high potency hybrid extract. I don't believe there is a better agaricus supplement out there. In drop form, this mushroom extract can be added to juice, or dropped onto a fork full of supper, or dropped into your breakfast smoothie. Very versatile and easy to take.
Cordyceps and Red Reishi- These mushrooms I order in powder form. If you have read my e-book Home HerbaList Handbook then you will recognize Our4Corners webstores. Cathy from Our4Corners helped me write that e-book. Her e-store has an extensive supply of organic, pure herbs and spices, and I get my cordyceps and red reishi mushrooms in POWDER form from her. If you like e-bay you can visit her at http://stores.ebay.com/Our-4-Corners and her website is http://our4corners.net/.
I love mushroom powders for their versatility. You can put them in anything and everything you are cooking from eggs, to sauces and gravies, to soups and smoothies. Sprinkle mushroom powder on the pizza crust, add it to breadings or seasonings for meat or fish (if you eat meat or fish), add it to rice, or mashed potatoes…. literally anything goes good with some mushroom powder!!
)
Maitake and Shiitake- These mushrooms I order online in whole dehydrated form, keep them in my cupboard and use them in my cooking whenever I want chunks of mushroom. A hint is that nearly every day I cook something with these wonderful healing mushrooms in them. Since I don't eat meat anymore, I find Maitake and Shiitake add a much fuller flavor to soups, sauces and casseroles than white button mushrooms. I use these, for example, to make the best mushroom risotto you have ever had. Soaked the mushrooms in 2 cups of water plus 3 cups of vegetable broth, and then use the soaking liquid as a base for the risotto. mmmm very delicious and good for you!
Again I turn to E-bay to order my dehydrated Shiitake and Maitake mushrooms. I like using e-bay merchants because of the added protection paying with Paypal offers me. Here is the merchant I order these mushrooms from and they are premium quality. http://stores.ebay.com/Natural-Arts-Company Once there, find the Store Search box and search for mushroom.
Portabella, Crimini and White Button mushrooms- These are the mushrooms I can get at my local grocers pretty much year round. Crimini (also called mini-bella) are portabella's that haven't been allowed to grow as big. When I make tomato pasta sauces, pizza, mock meat-loaf, omelet, or anything else that I want minced mushooms or slices I use one or all three of these fresh mushrooms.
You can see how easy it is to get lots of variety in mushrooms with a little planning ahead. Some dishes have all 4 of the different forms that I stock, and some dishes just have one, or maybe two, but I definitely have no problem eating mushrooms for health AND delightful taste every single day!
