I’m In Love with John Milton Fogg May 31, 2008 – 1:02 pm | by Shelley Penney - The MLM Diva
OK I admit it, I am in love… (don’t tell my husband!)
I’ve heard that the first step to coming to terms with an addiction is admitting it publicly. So I am "coming out". I am ‘fessin’ up. I am standing here before you, hat in hand, and admitting I am weak.
My secret passion is for everything and anything "John Milton Fogg".
John Who" says you? huh? Admittedly some of you may not know who John is. If you are new to network marketing, or live in a cave in Saudi Arabia then I forgive you. If neither of those situations apply to you, then you better get acquainted, lest I banish thee from my list for ever.
John Milton Fogg - The Author
John is famous (yes he IS!) for authoring the best selling network marketing book of all time. A book called "The Greatest Networker in the World."
When you read the book, you really get a sense of the author, and I found this strange. I found it strange because I am an avid reader of all types of books… fiction and non-fiction alike… and even though this book is "fiction" (maybe based on reality?) it has a real feel to it. The ‘real’ about it is the author’s beliefs about people and relationships and their importance, not just in network marketing, but ‘for real’. I’ve never had such a strong sense of an author from reading a fiction piece. It was a remarkable experience for me.
The story itself resonates within me still, and I am on my fifth reading. Whenever I get lost in networking, or feel like I’ve strayed from my intended path, I pick up the book and start reading. It has come to be a beacon for me, always leading me out of the fog (g?) and setting me back on track.
As Fate Should Have it
Sometime a year or two ago I was practicing the Law of Attraction, working on conjuring up all things good to appear in my life. I was at a point in my networking career when I was experiencing a ’stretching of wings’. I was stepping out of my comfort zone into the arena of ‘live training’. It was something I was doing because I felt very strongly that with the advent of the "information age" we were losing sight, as an industry, of what network marketing was all about. I had been browsing and came across one of John Fogg’s blogs, and I thought to myself… "wow I would love to speak with this guy"!
IMAGINE that about an hour after I thought that, I went to my fave mlm forum to read and contribute, and what should I see but a post from none other than "the" John himself! After I picked myself up from my swoon, I gathered up the nerve to ask him for his phone number. (Thank gawd for 90’s attitudes. Bold is still in! )
He replied immediately to my email address. That was the start of a journey for me. I picked up the phone and called him.
So what’s to love?
The first thing that struck me was his voice. John has a deep resonating "whiskey and cigars" kind of voice. An old-time radio newscaster’s voice. A Paul Harvey "…rest of the story" kind of voice. It’s a voice that comes from the chest, full of warmth and confidence and comfort. I immediately felt at ease, and I’ve since learned that that is one of his charms, and one of the reasons he is SO successful as an MLM / Network Marketer Interviewer.
One of the other things I found out about John Milton Fogg is that he doesn’t pretend to be anything (or anyone) else. He is unapologetically human, and for someone who is revered in so many circles, it is so refreshing to find a significant lack of preening. Don’t get me wrong… he has an ego… it’s just well balanced with humility, care, and a genuine desire to leave a mark for good.
John Milton Fogg (as a good friend pointed out to me recently) is a hippie living in the new century. He’s all peace, and love and ‘yeah man’ on the surface, but underneath that there is something deeply profound and thought provoking. Just about everything he says literally forces you to explore what you really believe, and more than that, to explore WHY you really believe. It’s a little unsettling in some ways, and on the other hand, I’d like to kick back in bare feet with The Who playing in the background, and a wreath of smoke lazily circling upward, and really, like, "get into it man".
The reason I am talking about John Milton Fogg….
Donna Valdes is an incredible networker, and a very good friend of mine. This week she was interviewed by John for his series called The Mastermind Sessions.
As I was listening to Donna I once again marveled at John’s brilliance as an interviewer. I was reminded that networking is about sharing and relationships, and friendships, and unselfish giving. By keeping my love of John Milton Fogg all to myself, I am really in conflict with this man’s purpose, and ultimately my own purpose. YOU deserve to fall in love with John Milton Fogg the way I have. You deserve to have his positive, indeed life changing, influence in your life. You deserve to really GET what this industry is really about, and no one can help you GET it like John Milton Fogg.
I am not really "on the wagon". Rather I am inviting you to fall OFF the wagon with me.
A love of John Milton Fogg will be one of the most uplifting and soul searching and personal growing experiences you can experience in your networking career if you allow yourself to embrace the philosophy of a guy who really knows what WE are all about!
