In MLM you had better learn to Get Over Yourself! May 16, 2008 – 10:14 am | by Shelley Penney - The MLM Diva
It’s my first post and I may as well start with a big ole bang up RANT! If you want to succeed in Network Marketing there really is only ONE principle you have to remember. Stop acting (and asking other people to treat you) like you are the center of the universe. I’ve got news for you…. you’re NOT!
You will never be able to grow a large organization if everything is about you. Network marketing isn’t about YOU. It is about a whole lot of people like you. Here are some of the things you will hear, see or experience over the course
of your career.
- "I’m not interested": The person who says this is not saying "You’re not interesting", and yet that is exactly what some people hear. Have you ever gone into the shoe store, and had the clerk come up and ask, "Can I help you?", and you reply, "No thanks, I’m just looking.", and then you leave. Do you think the clerk quit because you said that?
- "You didn’t give me enough support (training, guidance, leadership)": OK, well maybe you didn’t, HOWEVER, that person can choose to seek what he or she needs upline, and most companies have conference call training and a myriad of tools they can use. If that person chooses to quit, then they quit because they choose not to find support. If you become aware of the problem then you should help if you can, but ultimately each of us is responsible for our own business. A crappy sponsor is a reason to quit, but some people choose to stay and build despite the crappy sponsor. The power of choice still resides with the person making the choice.
- "The shipping time is too long, the products are too expensive, I don’t like the taste, the box is the wrong color, the post office doesn’t ring the doorbell when my order is here, it always comes when I’m in the tub, it’s the wrong phase of the moon…": It is easy to shoulder the burden of other people’s complaints… to either want to jump to the defense of the company, or make things better. RESIST the urge. You are having the same experience, as are many, many other people in your company. It isn’t your responsibility to buy into the minor complaints of your downline, and fix it all up. In these circumstances I like to ask… "Is this issue major enough to stop you from working". If the answer is yes, then I ask, "What is the solution, and who at the company have you shared it with." If they just can’t get past it, shrug and move on. Successful people don’t quit because the check was in the envelope upside down.
- "I’ve been working a different biz for 3 months…": HUH? Well people come and people go. If someone has left your organization mentally, and didn’t call you, it is because THEY didn’t have the courage to. Unless you have a history of screaming, and generally just being over the top intimidating, then chances are it is their issue, not yours. if you DO have a history of the aforementioned traits, then the title still applies.
- "You just want me so YOU can make money.": My answer to this… "It isn’t any secret that I need to earn a living to support my family. The girl who owns the corner store wants you so she can earn money, and you still buy gas there. There isn’t much opportunity to better your life circumstances when you buy gas. I get to feed my family AND help you feed yours."
There are a ton of other things, but I think you get the idea. If you are too shy to talk about your business to someone, it is because you are self focused. If your feelings get hurt because of something someone says, it is because you are self focused. If you find you can’t move ahead in your business, it is likely because you are self focused.
Sometimes being self focused is a necessary trait. Most of the time in Network Marketing it impedes your growth and prevents you from being the leader you are meant to be. If you want massive success in MLM, you had better learn to get over yourself. Otherwise the people who you bring onto your team will quickly get over you, and move on.
